How to Know What Your Want and Need

Before deciding on a network solution, you need to first know what you want and need from the solution. Without clearly documenting these things, any solution thrown at you will do. Follow three steps to produce a list of items you want and need in a network solution.

Define the result you want from the solution. You specialize in knowing what services your customers want and making sure you provide the best. You also set the direction for your network. Instead of choosing a technology or product, determine what you want to receive as a result of the solution:

·         Speed

·         Revenue

·         Competitive Advantage

·         Capacity

·         Customers

Leave it up to the engineers to figure out how to make it happen.

Establish Your Priorities. Once you know what you want, prioritize them. No one ever gets everything they want. The trick is getting what you really need.

Determine “must haves” vs. “like to haves”. Finally, segment the things you “must have” vs. those you’d “like to have.” When it comes time to make tough decisions, you will have already made them.
