Current IT security threats are much more complex than they were only a few years ago. They are financially driven, sophisticated, invisible and highly targeted. Although operating on a private network is more secure than having to go out to Internet to connect to the organization virtually, security threats from outside still abound.
Take these five steps to ensure your network stays private and secure:
1. Maintain traditional anti-virus protection: reactive security enforcement is still a must, but should not be the only defense taken.
2. Proactively protect against malware and spam: invest in software that detects new threats and provides updates and protection as necessary.
3. Take preventative measures to control access into network: controlling who can access the network reduces the risk of infection.
4. Control legitimate applications and user behavior: controlling the use of non-business-critical software applications narrows the threat to security.
5. Control and encrypt devices and data: mobile devices and data are essential; make sure information cannot be accessed by the wrong people even if a lap top, CD or USB thumb drive falls into the wrong hands.
