OTA Technical Conference: Fight Losing the Landline Customer

On Wednesday, Sept 23, I had a great opportunity to attend and speak at the Oklahoma Telephone Association's Technical Conference. The conference provided an opportunity for telco's around the area to reconnect and discuss and gain insight into the issues of today.

I presented in the afternoon on the major technology movements occuring within the cable industry and provided for the telco attendees insight into what they are competing against in the marketplace. My presentation topics included:

The DOCSIS 3.0 movement

Recently CableLabs released this newest protocol for DOCSIS. DOCSIS 3.0 provides cable operators the ability to offer increased bandwidth and speed. The protocol can be deployed without a major overhaul of the network, which makes it a very attractive deployment. While DOCSIS 3.0 has amazing potential for the cable industry, if a cable company doesn’t plan ahead and create a flexible network, problems will arise. For more information on DOCSIS 3.0, read our free eBook: Everything You Need To Know About DOCSIS 3.0.

RFoG replacing coaxial cables

Currently, I am seeing cable operators moving to RFoG instead of undertaking major upgrades especially when the existing plants have little fiber and during rebuild situations. RFoG provides cable operators what a FTTP deployment provides Telcos. Perhaps the biggest benefit RFoG provides the cable industry is its ability to replace coax and its impairments driving maintenance costs down by 60 to 90 percent.

I would like to personally thank all of those who attended and participated in the conference; it was a beneficial event for all.
